Common Components of 20 Stainless Steel Alloys
The primary elements in alloy steel, in addition to iron and carbon, include
Chromium: Increases hardness, corrosion resistance, and strength.
Nickel: Improves toughness and ductility.
Molybdenum: Enhances strength and heat resistance.
Vanadium: Increases strength, toughness, and resistance to wear.
Manganese: Enhances toughness and wear resistance.
Superalloys may also include both commonplace and exotic alloying elements
Titanium: Improves yield and ultimate tensile strength, reduces elongation at fracture.
Copper: Improves corrosion resistance up to 0.2%, but deteriorates many properties when higher.
Aluminum: Improves toughness but reduces creep resistance.
Tantalum: Improves strength without reducing toughness.
Niobium: At 0.02 to 0,05% this refines austenitic grain size and uniformity.

Physical Properties of 20 Stainless Steel Alloys
Density
Stainless steel density usually increases with an increasing level of alloying elements, particularly molybdenum. Austenitic stainless steel grades typically have a higher density than other types of stainless steel.
Elastic Modulus
Also known as Young's modulus, the elastic modulus of stainless steel is a measure of its stiffness, which is particularly important in construction applications. The elastic modulus decreases as temperature increases.
Thermal Properties
Thermal expansion and thermal conductivity are the two physical properties that vary the most between types of stainless steel. Austenitic grades have higher thermal expansion than ferritic grades. Thermal conductivity decreases as the alloying level increases.
Surface Treatment of Stainless Steel Alloys
Painting And Powder Coating: These techniques involve applying a protective or decorative coating to the stainless steel surface. While they add colour and improve resistance to scratches and wear, they can reduce the material's natural corrosion resistance if the coating is damaged. In applications where aesthetics and additional protection are desired, regular inspection and maintenance of the coating are necessary to prevent rust formation.
PVD (physical vapor deposition): PVD coating deposits a thin, hard layer of metal compounds (such as titanium nitride) onto the stainless steel surface. It enhances wear resistance and can provide various colours without compromising corrosion resistance. PVD coatings are often used in high-wear environments and can be applied to most types of stainless steel. However, certain alloys may require specific pre-treatments to ensure optimal adhesion and performance.
Electroplating: Electroplating deposits a layer of another metal (such as chromium or nickel) onto the stainless steel surface to improve its appearance and resistance to wear and corrosion. This method is commonly used in applications where both enhanced aesthetics and protection against wear are necessary.
